The Tonder festival in Denmark (22-25 August) was another great success. Over the weekend 25,000 people attended a series of concerts spread throughout the town and on the festival sight.
Allan's first concert was with three other songwriters -Tim O'Brien, Chuck Brodsky and Bruce Guthro in the Kulturhuset, Tonder. All four songwriters sat on stage together for two sets of 1 hour and 15 minutes each and simply sang their songs in succession. Nothing was rehearsed and yet such was the success of their performance they received a standing ovation.
On Saturday in the larger hall, Tonderhal One Allan played a concert with Waterson/Carthy and Donovan. At first it seemed it was a strange combination, but as the reviews stated, it was a great success.
Sunday was dedicated to the release of the Derroll Adams Tribute CD and the Tribute Concert on Main Stage 1. This was recorded by Danish Radio and filmed by an independent company. If the film is released commercially check this web-site for details as and when they come in.
In January 2003, as part of the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, plans are being made to perform ten concerts with workshops on songwriting throughout Scotland. A.T. will also be appearing at one or two concerts in Glasgow for the festivals although precise details have not yet been finalized.
In February 2003 A.T. will be touring with Dick Gaughan on a tour entitled "Both Sides the Tweed". Ten concerts are being scheduled throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Each concert will be preceded by a session lasting approximately an hour where both A.T. and Dick will discuss their approach to songs and songwriting.
In April 2003, 3rd to 14th A.T. will be touring Denmark with John Wright. Those who are familiar with John's work know that he always tours with a band. However, on this occasion he will not have a band with him - the show will be A.T. and John on stage for two sets of 1 hour singing A.T.'s songs and some of John's favourite songs. For bookings please contact A.T.'s new agent: Bent Juul Rasmussen. His contact information can be found on the Tours page. Such has been the interest in this project that John and A.T. will be touring Holland in November 2003.
A.T. has not toured in America since he lived there in the early 70's. However, recently he has been asked to play various venues and it is therefore now under consideration. Possible time periods are either in late April/early May 2003 or in June 2003.

A.T. has returned from his tour of Denmark and Germany (Denmark was a solo tour and Germany was a duo tour, played with Helmut Debus). It was a successful tour and one of the highlights was the new song A.T. had written for the tour, "The Lovely Lili Marlene" which uses as its theme the fact that during the war Helmut's father was in the German navy and A.T.'s father was in the British navy. Both men came home from the war singing the same song - Lili Marlene. Sixty years later the sons of those men who fought each other in a war are not only the best of friends but are making music together. The last stanza says:
"For enemies can be brothers when united in a song."
When the song finishes, A.T. sings Lili Marlene in German. On several occasions Helmut and A.T. got a standing ovation after this song was sung. They will not tour again until May 2004, but bookings for concerts are already being taken.
During October the artist Allan Black (who painted the portrait of A.T.) will spend a week in the Augenwiede Art Gallery, Muenster, Germany. He will be working alongside the resident artist, Mirjam, and will be on hand to discuss his work. On Friday 18th October A.T. will give a concert in the Gallery. Tickets are by invitation only, but additional tickets may be available by phoning Judith Ruchert-Schramm in Germany on 0251 482 8090.
The Living Tradition - Issue 48 - May 2002: "Out of Time". On Reviews page.
